During the Star Trek panel at WonderCon, JJ Abrams was asked to give a status update on a sequel to Cloverfield. I’m not going to pretend like some big news was dropped, as Abrams basically said what he always says. He reiterated that if they do a sequel, it won’t just be a business decision, and that they need a good idea before moving forward. Here is where things get a little bit interesting. Abrams says there is an idea.

“We have an idea that we thought was pretty cool that we’re playing with, which means there will be something that’s connected to Cloverfield, but I hope it happens sooner rather than later because the idea is pretty sweet.”

Obviously, the Abrams quote doesn’t really give you much. A good idea exists, but how far has it been developed? Is there a treatment? Is someone working on a script? Is it even a sequel? Possibly a spin-off? Note that Abrams says the idea is “connected to Cloverfield”. As Star Trek nears release, I’m sure we’ll get some of the answers to those questions.

If I were Abrams I would film another secret teaser trailer and release it attached to Star Trek to garner excitement. But this time around could Abrams and company really get away with that sort of thing without word spreading to the online movie sites?
